A propósito dos expatriados ingleses em Florença

Eis um excerto da recensão. Podeis ler o artigo no site do TLS:

"The expatriate community which established itself – or reinvented itself – in Florence at the end of the nineteenth century presents several fascinating perspectives to the cultural historian. Foreigners had played a substantial role in the life of the city since the days when Johann Zoffany painted his multiple portrait of Grand Touring milords and dilettanti gathered under the dome of the Uffizi Tribuna, but it was in the decades after Italian Unification that this alien element really assumed complexity and significance. Its traces are still faintly palpable, even if the English voices reverberating within Caffè Doney are no longer identifiably Oxonian, Seeber’s international bookshop has become a Max Mara retail outlet and the villas once inhabited by the aesthetes and aristocrats of northern Europe have been turned into luxury hotels or graduate study centres for foreign universities."
